Globally, insect pests adversely affect approximately 75% of the most important crops. However, widespread use chemical insecticides has significant drawbacks, including non-specific biological activity, toxicity to humans, detrimental effects on beneficial insects, and rapid development resistance. In this context, prodigiosin—a tripyrrolic secondary metabolite produced by various microorganisms—emerges as a promising alternative due its favourable properties, such being non-toxic, environmentally safe, non-irritant, non-allergenic, having non-carcinogenic potential. Prodigiosin demonstrated insecticidal efficiency against at developmental stages. Studies suggest that prodigiosin inhibits enzymes like acetylcholine esterase, protease, acid phosphatase induces oxidative stress. This review explores potential an eco-friendly insecticide, discussing production, extraction, purification processes advantages, disadvantages, mechanism action, future perspectives. Special emphasis is given using non-pathogenic strains mitigate biosafety concerns.
