Synopsis Over recent years, recognition of the need to develop climate-smart marine spatial planning (MSP) has gained momentum globally. In this roundtable discussion, we use a question-and-answer format leverage diverse perspectives and voices involved in study sustainable MSP conservation under global environmental social change. We intend dialogue serve as stepping stone toward developing ocean initiatives that are sustainable, equitable, climate-resilient around globe.

Global marine biodiversity declines require bold and ambitious plans to safeguard ecosystem services. Overfishing, habitat loss projected climate impacts have yielded deleterious effects on predators, in particular, driving increasing threat of extinction for many shark species with implications health. Identifying protecting critical areas sharks is fundamental their protection, may allow recovery. Here we use baited remote underwater video stations investigate spatial temporal patterns by a Special Area Conservation (SAC) that centrally important the regional blue economy UK, Cardigan Bay SAC. Our results show heterogeneous trends sharing between smallspotted catsharks Scyliorhinus canicula nursehounds S. stellaris . Nearshore reef habitats are substantially more than non-reef both species. The relative abundance each species, however, roughly inversely seasonally proportional, highest March September, respectively. Temporal niche partitioning be an mechanism systems, but has not been widely investigated sympatric communities. These findings directly relevant ongoing development Welsh Marine Evidence Strategy (2019-2025) National Plan, particularly inform planning strengthen role SAC management design areas.
