Visible-light-mediated
metal-free
irreversible
phototransformations
of
ortho-bihetaryl
appended
chalcones
are
reported.
Isosteric
replacement
one
the
aryl
residues
with
a
chalcone
fragment
in
diarylethene
(terarylene)
molecules
leads
to
significant
expansion
synthetic
capabilities
these
compounds,
thereby
opening
up
access
wide
range
new
functional
materials.
It
was
found
for
first
time
that
protonation
carbonyl
group
moiety
ortho-bihetarylchalcones
exclusively
promotes
6π-photocyclization
leading
formation
oxathia[5]helicenes,
whereas
1,2,3,4-tetrasubstituted
cyclobutanes
preferably
formed
upon
photolysis
toluene
presence
triethylamine.
The
helicene
framework
is
due
visible
light-induced
6π-electrocyclization
hexatriene
system
bihetaryl
chalcones,
and
[2
+
2]-photocycloaddition
facilitated
by
aggregation
molecules,
which
consequence
head-to-head
excimer
π-π-stacking
interactions
naphthofuran
polyaromatic
systems.
These
results
will
provide
valuable
information
on
photocyclization
analogues,
can
be
used
develop
efficient
protocols
synthesis
fused
heteroaromatic
frameworks
promising
materials
applications
material
science,
molecular
electronics
medicine.

It

overview
