Abstract All eukaryotes have linear chromosomes that are distributed to daughter nuclei during mitotic division, but the ancestral state of nuclear division in last eukaryotic common ancestor (LECA) is so far unresolved. To address this issue, we employed reconstructions for states can be found across tree concerning intactness envelope mitosis (open or closed), position spindles (intranuclear extranuclear), and symmetry being either axial (orthomitosis) bilateral (pleuromitosis). The data indicate LECA possessed closed orthomitosis with intranuclear spindles. Our reconstruction compatible recent findings indicating a syncytial LECA, because it decouples three main processes: chromosome partitioning, cell (cytokinesis). possession using adds number cellular traits now attributed providing insights into lifestyle otherwise elusive biological entity at origin cells. Closed would buffer mutations arising by allowing viable sets complement defective via mRNA cytosol.

We study a slender filament beating in viscous fluid with novel curvature-dependent bending stiffness. Our numerical and experimental investigations reveal that such differential stiffness can sustain planar waves far along flexible filaments, stark contrast to the uniform-stiffness case which requires more sophisticated control. In particular, we establish basal actuation as viable, parsimonious mechanism for generating high-amplitude waves. Moreover, resulting beat patterns closely resemble power-and-recovery strokes of propulsive biological filaments cilia, suggesting extensive applications robotic engineered systems. SUMMARY Cilia and the nucleus were two defining features of last eukaryotic common ancestor. In early evolution, these structures evolved through diversification a membrane-coating ancestor, protocoatomer. While in cilia, descendants this protein complex into parts intraflagellar transport complexes BBSome, gained its selectivity by recruiting protocoatomer-like proteins to nuclear envelope form selective pore complexes. Recent studies show growing number shared between proteomes respective organelles, it is currently unknown how ciliary could acquire functions vice versa . The are still observable today remain relevant for understanding disease mechanisms behind ciliopathies. work, we review evolutionary history cilia their integrate current knowledge theories evolution. We postulate scenario where both compartments co-evolved that fits models explaining nucleoporins acquired dual functions.
