Abstract Many strands of research by different groups, starting from teratocarcinomas in the laboratory mouse, later moving corresponding human tumors, contributed to isolation and description pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). In this review, I highlight contributions my own research, particularly at Wistar Institute during 1980s, when with colleagues we characterized one first clonal lines embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, teratocarcinomas, identified key features including cell surface antigen markers that have since found a place study exploitation PSC. Much depended upon close teamwork colleagues, many other laboratories, who expertise experience. It was also often driven circumstance chance rather than pursuit grand design.
