Governing Sustainability: Why Democracy Enhances Social ESG but Weakens Environmental and Governance Outcomes DOI

Published: Jan. 1, 2025

This study examines the relationship between democracy and national Environmental, Social, Governance (ESG) performance using a panel dataset of 95 countries from 1990 to 2018. Employing fixed-effects regression, panel-corrected standard errors (PCSEs), system generalized method moments (GMM) estimations, analysis reveals complex multidimensional impact on ESG outcomes. While democratic institutions enhance social sustainability—where one-unit increase in is associated with 0.0004-point rise scores—they simultaneously weaken environmental governance performance, scores declining by 0.0003 per unit democracy. These divergent effects reflect democracy’s capacity promote welfare accountability yet also highlight structural constraints such as policy fragmentation short-term electoral incentives that hinder comprehensive reforms. The findings further indicate these trade-offs are more pronounced developed democracies, whereas emerging democracies exhibit balanced, albeit modest, gains. By challenging assumption uniformly advances sustainability, this underscores importance institutional adaptation targeted interventions across different political contexts.

Utilizing prefecture-level data from China covering the period 2003 to 2019, this study examines effect of “Two Integrations” policy, which aims promote integration informatization and industrialization in pilot cities, on green innovation. By employing a multi-period difference-in-differences approach, findings indicate that policy has significantly positive impact This is primarily driven by enhanced economic agglomeration improved productive services. Furthermore, heterogeneity analysis reveals policy’s influence more pronounced cities characterized low energy-dependency, robust information infrastructure, an advanced industrial structure. These provide insights into practical implications specific experimental zone China.

Research background: The twin pressures of economic downturn and climate change faced by countries around the world have become more pronounced over past decade. A renewable energy transition is believed to play a central role in mitigating economic-climate paradox. While architectural computational power artificial intelligence particularly well suited address challenges massive data processing demand forecasting during transition, there very scant empirical assessment that takes social science perspective explores effects AI development on transition. Purpose article: This paper aims answer two key questions: One is, how does software promote or inhibit shift consumption towards renewables? other under what policy interventions positive effect promoting consumption? Methods: We employ dataset 62 economies covering period 2011–2020 analyze impact where possible confounders, including political characteristics time-invariant elements, are controlled using fixed-effects estimation along with specified covariates.
