ABSTRACT Drawing on competing institutional logics theory, we examine the complexity of corporate sustainability practices in an underexplored context developing economies. Analyzing 11,757 firm‐year observations from 19 emerging countries across Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America between 2013 2022, document a U‐shaped relationship ESG performance firm value, with financial failing to mediate this nexus. This indicates that market remains dominant logic ESG. Shareholders initially penalize value when companies increasingly incorporate community through initiatives, despite their positive impact profitability. However, as benefits strategies become more apparent, shareholder valuation improves, allowing coexist. We term temporality “transient penalty zones.” Our findings highlight need eliminate transient zones effective communication standardized disclosure prevent greenwashing sustain investor trust.

Abstract In the digital economy era, supply chain digitalization has become a crucial factor driving sustainable development. Based on Chinese A‐share listed companies from 2011 to 2021, we use innovation and application pilots as quasi‐natural experiment empirically examine impact of corporate environmental, social, governance (ESG) performance via double machine learning (DML) model. The results indicate that significantly enhances ESG performance, this conclusion remains valid after various robustness tests. Mechanism analysis shows improves by enhancing internal operational efficiency, increasing interfirm trade credit, external supervision. Finally, promotion effect is mainly present in corporates with stronger cooperative culture, capabilities, party organization, those operating heavily polluting industries.
