The demand to develop and produce eco-friendly alternatives for food packaging is increasing. huge negative impact that the disposal of so-called “single-use plastics” has on environment propelling market search new solutions, requires initiatives drive faster responses from scientific community, industry, governmental bodies adoption implementation materials. Bioplastics are an alternative group materials partly or entirely produced renewable sources. Some bioplastics biodegradable even compostable under right conditions. This review presents different properties these materials, mechanisms biodegradation, their environmental impact, but also a holistic overview most important available in potential application packaging, consumer perception bioplastics, regulatory aspects, future challenges.

The production of plastics from biological resources is a promising option for decarbonizing plastic and solving the waste issue. current practice using food plants such as corn feedstocks however entails sustainability issues related to agricultural land use. Alternative in form by-products have been explored some time but are yet awaiting reach stage market readiness. Lack cost competitiveness has identified one major obstacle. This paper undertakes first comparative meta-analysis costs producing Polylactic Acid (PLA), leading bio-based polymer, two alternative feedstocks: grain stover. Cost contributions specific inputs process stages through chain perspective. By applying Monte Carlo technique within bioplastic analysis, uncertainties estimates reflected. As uncertainty factors, both technological input requirements development prices considered. Despite higher energy requirements, we estimate that stover-based PLA already competitive with grain-based terms variable costs, resulting lower feedstock procurement. However, this overshadowed by disadvantage fixed costs. Our long-term analysis stresses importance lowering unit upscaling associated learning effects. A restriction represents demand side. To render competitive, it crucial inform consumers about environmental superiority switch.
