Abstract Background Early intervention gives young people the best chance to recover from eating disorders (EDs). An important focus of early is shortening time between a person first developing symptoms and starting treatment (duration untreated disorder; DUED). Abstract Objective Future treatments for eating disorders (ED) need to be enhanced by targeting maintaining mechanisms. Literature suggests self‐criticism and self‐critical perfectionism act as key mechanisms exacerbating ED, self‐compassion protects against self‐criticism. This meta‐analysis examines associations between on disordered (DE), reviews how relate each other with respect DE. Method Searches across three databases yielded 135 studies 42,952 participants. Heterogeneity, publication bias, quality assessments were analyzed. Moderation analyses measures, clinical nonclinical samples, cross‐sectional experimental also conducted. Preliminary evidence negative relationships −.40 −.43) −.04 −.88). Discussion Greater levels is linked greater reduced self‐compassion, suggesting tackle nurture standard ED. Understanding these interactions better conjunction dismantling intervention can help develop more effective efficient interventions people Public Significance Statement Higher are higher lower self‐compassion.
