Abstract Background The analysis of bird community assembly rules is fundamental to understand which mechanisms determine the composition species in urban areas. However, long-term variation has not been analyzed yet. objectives this study are (1) analyze along rural-urban gradients three cities central Argentina and (2) compare patterns between two periods separated by 6 years. Bird surveys were performed transects urban, suburban, rural habitats during 2011 2017. Departures from null models that took into account differences richness (standardized effect size, SES) calculated for functional phylogenetic diversities. Results A total 57 recorded. was higher suburban than habitats. SES diversity increased over years significantly lower habitats, showing a pattern clustering most urbanized areas randomness ones. Phylogenetic both ones, assemblages changed Conclusions communities phylogenetically random functionally clustered, evidencing environmental filtering urbanization. In contrast, tended be certain clades adapted processes structuring consistent 2 compared.

Human-altered landscapes may act as an environmental filter benefiting species or individuals with specific sets of capacities behaviors. Yet the effects human activity on culturally transmitted traits in animals are still poorly understood. Combining song recordings and simulated territory intrusions, we investigated whether songs (a cultural trait) aggressiveness personality small ground finches ( Geospiza fuliginosa ) differed along a gradient levels (high-low-high) spanning two habitats contrasting rainfall (arid lowlands, humid highlands). We found that more common syllable types were prevalent arid lowland sites at high activity. The number syllables per song, duration, tempo rhythmicity did not differ across During territorial living areas higher lowlands (regardless activity) showed strongest aggressive response compared to those lower highlands. Thus, prevalence aggression commonness correlated each other sites. Our results support idea resource distribution human-impacted environments select jointly for behavioral phenotypes such well traits.

Cities commonly support a high abundance of non-native species that can affect both wildlife and human health; however, their distribution across the urban environment relationship with socioeconomics are not well documented. Here, we map three birds in Latin American city-domestic pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica), house sparrow (Passer domesticus), monk parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)-and investigate effect on abundance. We found C. domestica exhibited random city but reached its greatest low-income areas. P. domesticus an aggregated abundance, being most abundant southern western areas M. monachus northeastern part reaching high-income Low-income likely provide food, shelter, nesting sites for domesticus, whereas income have greater tree cover larger trees which build communal nests. Our study finds varies between socioeconomic groups; therefore, targeted management is needed different zones to limit negative effects native prevent zoonotic diseases.
