Numerous fishes produce sounds and their transmission detection may be hindered by increasing levels of anthropogenic noise. We investigated acoustic communication during dyadic contests between male croaking gouramis (Trichopsis vittata, Osphronemidae) in the presence absence white hypothesised that fish modify signalling noise order to maintain intraspecific communication. Under controlled laboratory settings we compared agonistic behaviour, visual no-noise conditions. Trichopsis vittata produced were significantly lower level higher dominant frequency under treatments. No difference was found or temporal sound characteristics. This study indicates does not affect amount behaviour a highly vocal fish. increase observed gouramis, indicating Lombard effect is present all vocalising The lack shows potentially (human-made) fish, which territory maintenance reproduction.

Acoustic communication signals are inevitably challenged by ambient noise. In response to noise, many animals adjust their calls maintain signal detectability. However, the mechanisms which auditory system adapts adjusted pulses unclear. Our previous study revealed that echolocating bat, Hipposideros pratti , increased its pulse intensity in presence of background white vivo single-neuron recording demonstrated midbrain neurons tuned second harmonic (H2 neurons) minimal threshold (MT) a similar degree as increment Furthermore, H2 exhibited consistent spike rates at best amplitudes and sharper tuning with noise compared silent conditions. The data indicated sound analysis was adapted same condition. This further examined echolocation frequency H. did not shift resting neuronal highly linked processing presenting constant (BF), sensitivity, selectivity. Thus, our results suggested responses process

Urbanization has a significant influence on amphibian communities, populations, and individuals because of habitat loss, degradation quality, fragmentation. Advertisement calls anurans are used for communication play an important role in reproduction; however, how anthropogenic noise change caused by urbanization affect anuran advertisement is less well known. In this study, we examined changes the two frog species, ornamented pygmy (Microhyla fissipes) rice (Fejervarya multistriata), during breeding season along urban–rural gradient Shanghai, China. We percentage impervious area (including buildings roads) each 2 km-radius landscape to represent index 34 study sites. then measured five call parameters (call duration, interval, rate, pulse dominant frequency) these species (100 males F. multistriata 89 M. site from May July 2020 2021. explored other variables (air temperature, snout–vent length calling situation (one calling, or together)) affected parameters. The results showed that frequency fissipes was significantly negatively related index, duration interval were air temperature; furthermore, rate positively also length. For multistriata, length, (two together), but contrast, suggested had different responses urbanization, which could help us better understand behaviors reproductive life-history strategies face rapid urbanization.
