Abstract Social interactions across taxa are often mediated through multiple signals. Studies examining the maintenance of signals mostly focused on males and fail to capture female signalling diversity strategies. In recent decade, there has been a surge in documentation signalling, however, our understanding functional relevance females still lags behind. this study, we examined an arboreal gliding lizard, Draco dussumieri , compared them those males. We specifically tested relative role backup signal receiver hypotheses both sexes. Female D.dussumieri used variety socially interact with conspecifics, especially using their dewlap. The repertoire was as diverse that males, although use varied. females, few seem be maintained by hypothesis, limited support for hypothesis well. For too, mechanisms appeared maintain Interestingly, some signals, sexes differed context which they given signal. Overall, these findings highlight can differ from observed Therefore, traits conventionally considered male-exclusive when also provide finer insights into trait function evolution.

Intertidal organisms must tolerate daily fluctuations in environmental parameters, and repeated exposure to co-occurring conditions may result tolerance multiple stressors correlating. The intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus experiences diurnal variation dissolved oxygen levels pH as the opposing processes of photosynthesis cellular respiration lead coordinated highs during day lows at night. While parameters with overlapping spatial gradients frequently correlated traits, less attention has been given exploring temporally stressors. We investigated whether hypoxia correlates low by separately testing stress 6 genetically differentiated populations T . independently checked for similarities each two latitude, sex, size, time since collection predictors. found that although did not, no predictor was significant both concluded not developing equivalent both. Although climate change alters several variables simultaneously, organisms’ abilities these changes be similarly coupled.

Abstract Conspicuous female signals have recently received substantial scientific attention, but it remains unclear if their evolution is the result of selection acting on females independently males or mutual facilitates change. Species that express female, not male, phenotypic variation among populations represents a useful opportunity to address this knowledge gap. White‐shouldered fairywrens ( Malurus alboscapulatus ) are tropical songbirds with well‐resolved phylogeny where coloration varies allopatrically across subspecies. We explored how four distinct signaling modalities, each putatively associated increased social selection, expressed in two vary competitive pressure females. Females derived subspecies M . moretoni evolved more ornamented plumage and shorter tails (a signal dominance) relative an ancestral lorentzi drab In response simulated territorial intrusions broadcasting song, both sexes aggressive coordinated mates movement vocalizations. Finally, songs complex than , song complexity does between either population. These results suggest correlated shifts tail morphology as well aggression may occurred changes intensity pressures. This highlights pressures can facilitate multimodal signals.
