The COVID-19 pandemic and associated “lockdown” measures spurred adverse employment changes economic insecurity in U.S. families. Paradoxically, there was a surge prosocial behavior. Chronically lower socioeconomic status has been with adults’ greater prosociality, counterintuitive phenomenon attributed to heightened sensitivity others’ needs. It is unclear whether experiencing an acute financial stressor—like the pandemic—would similarly promote prosociality. Following “tend-and-befriend” theory, pandemic-induced stress may have motivated parents engage their children behaviors as means of coping pandemic. Thus, we examined associations both engaging helping activities during shelter-in-place this supported parents’ coping. A total 492 (443 women; 72% White; income-per-capita range: $833–$87,500) ages 2–18 years completed online survey May–June 2020, assessing negative changes, stress, families’ engagement activities, parent’s Controlling for demographics pre-pandemic income, our indirect effects model found that more predicted which turn children.
