Abstract Background While most research on the non-verbal communication challenges encountered by autistic people centres visual stimuli, vocalizations remains overlooked. Laughter serves as a socio-emotional signal for affiliative bonding in interactions. Autistic seem to experience and produce laughter differently non-autistic are known have mentalizing difficulties. Neuroimaging evidence suggests that engage understand meaning behind conversational laughter. Here, we propose people’s difficulties lie not processing all types of laughter, but only Methods We used fMRI explore neural mechanisms underlying implicit different adults. 23 adults matched age, gender, IQ were scanned whilst passively listening funny words followed spontaneous or noise-vocoded vocalizations. Post-scan, they listened word plus pairs again rated funniness each word. Results Behaviourally, funnier than groups did differ. However, neuroimaging results showed increased activation medial prefrontal cortex during Additionally, greater supplementary motor area, part sensorimotor network, when either type Limitations Our current design does disentangle humour with insufficient temporal resolution their distinction, suggesting need future more temporally-precise techniques. Conclusions While both find makes funnier, there differences autism support contagion processing. This study reinforces idea essence an emotional expression sophisticated social communication. It also highlights face understanding consistently encounter everyday life, which may lead them vulnerability. Altogether, advocate clearer people.

Using a creative production task, jazz improvisation, we tested alternative hypotheses about the flow experience: (A) that it is state of domain-specific processing optimized by experience and characterized minimal interference from task-negative default-mode network (DMN) activity versus (B) recruits domain-general task-positive DMN supervised fronto-parietal control (FPCN) to support ideation. We recorded guitarists' electroencephalograms (EEGs) while they improvised provided chord sequences. Their flow-states were measured with Core Flow State Scale. Flow-related neural sources reconstructed using SPM12. Over all musicians, high-flow (relative low-flow) improvisations associated transient hypofrontality. High-experience musicians' showed reduced in posterior nodes. Low-experience musicians no flow-related or FPCN modulation. also modality-specific left-hemisphere low-experience right-hemisphere deactivations. These results are consistent idea represents enabled extensive practice paired cognitive control.

Background The creative arts have long been known for their therapeutic potential. These modalities, which include dance, painting, and music, among others, appear to be effective in enhancing emotional expression alleviating adverse physiological psychological effects. Engagement can pursued as a personal hobby, classroom setting, or through formal intervention with qualified therapist. active (i.e., creating) passive viewing, listening). Regardless of the modality manner engagement, mechanisms explaining efficacy remain poorly understood. Objective This study aims systematically review research investigating neurological activated during engagement arts, specific emphasis on roles medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) amygdala regulation (ER) behaviors. seeks provide preliminary evidence possible existence common neural underlying both phenomena, could inform development targeted interventions leveraging ER. Methods A systematic was conducted following Cochrane Collaboration guideline PRISMA standards identify studies examining activities. Results total six out 85 records meet inclusion criteria, all being basic studies. Preliminary findings suggest that consistently activate circuits implicated adaptive regulation, including mPFC amygdala. activations mirror pathways engaged ER strategies, suggesting shared between processing. Conclusion underscores potential complementary strategy alongside conventional care other evidence-based mind-body modalities. By elucidating ER, this contributes theoretical practical understanding role mental health. Future is recommended further explore these correlations implications practice.

Humor comprehension (i.e., getting a joke) and humor appreciation enjoying are distinct, cognitively complex processes. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) investigations have identified several key cortical regions but overlooked subcortical structures that theoretical importance in processing. The dorsal striatum (DS) contributes to working memory, ambiguity processing, cognitive flexibility, functions required accurately recognize humorous stimuli. ventral (VS) is critical reward processing enjoyment. We hypothesized the DS VS play important roles appreciation, respectively. investigated engagement of these distinct processes using fMRI. Twenty-six healthy young male female human adults completed two humor-elicitation tasks during 3 tesla fMRI scan consisting traditional behavior-based joke task naturalistic audiovisual sitcom paradigm Seinfeld viewing task). Across both methods, whole-brain analyses revealed activation inferior frontal gyrus, middle temporal gyrus for comprehension, cortex appreciation. Additionally, with region interest analyses, we specifically examined whether correlated tasks, demonstrated implicates VS, whereas only engages VS. These results establish role which has been previously overlooked, emphasize more generally. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Humorous stimuli processed by brain at least stages. We addressed whether arbitrary top–down regulation based on self-referential thinking could be valid for sensorimotor synchronization. hypothesized that the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) regulate synchronization in accordance with internal models generated by processing. To illustrate validity of hypothesis, we conducted a missing oddball task musical students. Utilizing event-related deep-brain activity (ER-DBA) method cooperatively potential (ERP) method, found dACC activation promotes repetitive tapping supported modal completion, whereas deactivation precise under avoiding erroneous responses pulses. Endogenous ERP components including P150 as marker completion and N200 response inhibition this claim. Furthermore, combining ER-DBA results, it was suggested brain creates coherent story to promote mediating sensory evidence via completion. The free energy measurements theoretically support these findings, thereby confirming our hypothesis.
