Abstract Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has garnered significant attention in the past decade as a prevalent chronic condition. Despite growing body of evidence implicating mitochondria NAFLD development, comprehensive bibliometric analyses within this research domain are scarce. This study aims to provide thorough overview knowledge framework and key areas related context NAFLD, utilizing techniques. Methods A search publications on from 2000 2023 was conducted using Web Science Core Collection database. VOSviewers, CiteSpace, R package “bibliometrix” were employed for precise assessment literature. Results Examining 2530 articles 77 countries, primarily led by United States China, revealed consistent increase mitochondria's role NAFLD. Leading institutions include University Coimbra, Missouri, Chinese Academy Sciences, Fudan University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Notably, International Journal Molecular Sciences emerged most popular journal, Hepatology frequently cited. With contributions 14,543 authors, Michael Roden published highest number papers, A. J. Samyal cocited author. Key focus investigating mitochondrial mechanisms impacting developing therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondria. Emerging hotspots associated with keywords such “inflammation,” “mitochondrial dysfunction,” “autophagy,” “obesity,” “insulin resistance.” Conclusion study, first analysis, synthesizes trends advancements Insights derived analysis illuminate current frontiers emerging interest, providing valuable reference scholars dedicated studies.
