Two major glaciations have been identified on land in England during the Middle Pleistocene. The earliest occurred Anglian Stage (= Elsterian, c . Marine Isotope Stage, MIS 12), evidence for which is best developed lowland Britain, as well offshore southern North Sea and Irish basins. second took place late Pleistocene, with most compelling found West Midlands, intermediate between Hoxnian Holsteinian; broadly 11) Ipswichian Eemian; 5e) interglacial stages Late Wolstonian Substage. Until recently this younger glacial episode was less clearly represented Pleistocene record and, a result, had little studied weakly defined. Interpreted Moreton Stadial glaciation Substage Saalian Substage/Drenthe Stadial, 6), it originally recognized English subsequently being Yorkshire, Lincolnshire northern East Anglia, potentially further SW far Bristol Channel. Mapping, particular by members of British Geological Survey, however, resulted deposits thought to pre‐date stage. This particularly so Anglia where there considerable controversy concerning number relationships sequences, 1970–1980s. Yet west remained unequivocal stage, Fenland eastern Midlands. Recent radiometric dating across Britain sediments long belong event now placed geochronological control established regional stratigraphy confirmed that two phases 199 147 ka events can be correlated European continent.

ABSTRACT Chronologic and geomorphic evidence of past glaciations is largely recorded in areas at relatively low elevation and/or landscapes defined by high glacial erosion. As a result, data from that did not experience significant erosion the highest locations are lacking reconstructions ice masses. Here, we use paired 10 Be 14 C exposure dating on quartz derived erratics bedrock to resolve mass fluctuations across an gradient Cairngorm Mountains Scotland. We find samples our dataset, 1140 m above sea level, yield ages indicating 23 000 years secular equilibrium for C, indicative single period starting as nunatak during Last Glacial Maximum. Other 1000 produce deglaciation Bølling–Allerød Interstadial, while concentrations display varying levels inheritance due local variations non‐glacial Samples lower elevations indicate Lateglacial moraine building event 15 ago, coincident with Wester Ross readvance, followed glacier retreat interrupted deposition ~14 ~11 ago. This dataset reconstructs both thinning marginal recession paleo‐ice masses within >600 vertical most recent glacial–interglacial transition, demonstrating utility Be/ erosion, increasing diversity chronologic available reconstructions.
