Abstract
Species
of
the
red
algal
genus
Meristotheca
are
important
natural
resources
that
can
be
used
directly
as
food
for
human
consumption
well
raw
materials
extraction
carrageenan.
Despite
being
harvested
in
Japan
and
Korea,
a
comprehensive
taxonomic
study
specimens
from
these
two
countries
to
elucidate
their
phylogenetic
position
is
lacking.
In
this
study,
we
aimed
clarify
identities
currently
regarded
M.
papulosa
Korea
by
analyzing
morphological
molecular
data.
As
result,
recognized
new
species,
pilulaora
sp.
nov.
resurrected
japonica
Japan.
The
entities
have
long
been
identified
exhibit
similar
external
morphologies.
They
appeared
independently
concatenated
tree
COI-5P
rbc
L
could
also
distinguished
morphologically
cystocarps
(blade
margins
;
marginal
proliferations
),
spinose
(absent
present
number
cortical
cell
layers
(two
4–8
).
DNA
analysis
local
populations
showed
11
haplotypes
on
Jeju
Island
with
no
apparent
geographical
structure.
High
genetic
diversity
occurrence
unique
southern
may
provide
basis
population
high
thermal
tolerance.
These
findings
strengthened
our
understanding

insights
into
conservation,
