Abstract
Growing
environmental
concerns
and
the
need
to
adopt
a
circular
economy
have
highlighted
importance
of
waste
valorization
for
resource
recovery.
Microbial
consortia-enabled
biotechnologies
made
significant
developments
in
biomanufacturing
valuable
resources
from
biomass
that
serve
as
suitable
alternatives
petrochemical-derived
products.
These
microbial
consortia-based
processes
are
designed
following
top-down
or
bottom-up
engineering
approach.
The
approach
is
classical
method
uses
variables
selectively
steer
an
existing
consortium
achieve
target
function.
While
high-throughput
sequencing
has
enabled

characterization,
major
challenge

Abstract
In
microbial
systems,
a
metabolic
pathway
can
be
either
completed
by
one
autonomous
population
or
alternatively
distributed
among
consortium
performing
division
of
labor
(MDOL),
where
several
specialized
populations
cooperate
to
complete
the
pathway.
MDOL
facilitates
system’s
function
reducing
burden;
however,
it
may
also
hinder
exchange
efficiency
intermediates
individuals.
As
result,
community
is
influenced
trade-offs
between
specialization
and
versatility
individuals,
with
latter
potentially
introducing
redundancy
into
community.
However,
remains
unclear
how
individuals
involved
controlled
