Abstract Context Counter-urbanization, or the reverse migration from city to countryside, is a well-known demographic trend associated with rural restructuring since 1980s. Counter-urbanization particularly relevant in social-ecological systems long history of human land use, such as Mediterranean ones. However, extent and impacts this phenomenon are largely unknown, region. Objectives We aim review state issue counter-urbanization focus on particular determinants outcomes landscapes. Methods conducted bibliographic using Web Science. summarized classified main findings different categories according socio-economic drivers process its landscape along sharing-sparing gradient. Results found 31 studies that met criteria be reviewed them follows: first group focused an urban sprawl driver; second linked gentrification. Abstract Rural abandonment is a significant process in the Mediterranean region, posing sustainability challenges for rural and urban areas. Although there an increase studies focusing on ecological implications impacts of land role rewilding, knowledge gap study socio-cultural dimension from local perspective, even though it crucial management decision. This focuses case Western Spain, where social survey was used to assess perceptions communities regarding their implication nature’s contributions people quality life. A campaign administered region during summer 2020, collecting 205 face-to-face surveys. The results show that overall have negative reaction toward abandonment. In addition, respondents recognize how traditional agriculture main source maintaining human well-being. Additionally, four groups narratives were identified representing clusters with different motivations interpretations paper calls understanding better perceptions, values, outcomes can be as input landscape management. Our indicate population perceives loss livelihoods may entail serious environmental societal problems, locals are forced abandon rural-associated ways life migrate

Fire prevention and suppression approaches that exclusively rely on silvicultural measures containment infrastructure have become increasingly ineffective in stopping the spread of wildfires. As agroforestry landscape mosaics consisting a mix different land cover use types are considered less prone to fire than forests, support involvement rural people agriculture forestry activities been proposed. However, it is unknown whether, current socio-economic context, these land-use interventions will nudge fire-prone landscapes towards more fire-resistant ones. We report case study Gata river catchment Sierra de Gata, Spain, which area has pilot site for Mosaico-Extremadura, an innovative participatory fire-risk-mitigation strategy. Our purpose assess efficacy project as “productive fuel breaks” their potential protecting high-risk areas. Interventions were effective reducing flame length rate spread, almost 40% intervention was sub-catchments with high risk. Therefore, they can function productive breaks and, if located strategically, contribute mitigating wildfire For reasons, view other economic social benefits, collaborative management highly recommended.

This systematic review examines the intersection of systems thinking and learning theory in addressing rural–urban challenges light increasing global urbanization. We explore how different dimensions thinking—ontological (how we understand systems) epistemological think about systems)—align with single-, double-, triple-loop research from 2014 to 2024.
