Abstract Background The pandemic of COVID-19 sets off public psychological crises and impacts social functioning. Pre-pandemic research has shown that as the mental resource wears out under long-term distress, empathy exhaustion will happen. While prosocial activities are positively linked to empathy, quantitative on pandemic's effect willingness been insufficiently examined. Prosocial behaviors carried during a life-threatening time promote communication encourage community members survive emergencies such food shortages natural disasters. Methods This study examined shifts in emotion, between pre-pandemic era China. Before (N = 520, 11/21/2019-11/23/2019) after 570, 2/23/2020-2/24/2020) pandemic, we explored an empathy-driven prosociality relationship through online task questionnaires with total 1,190 participants. During the post-COVID-19 era, everyone has risk of contracting virus and becoming victims COVID-19. Examining relationship between COVID-19 victimization experience its effects is more urgent. The aim present study to propose a mediation model investigate association smartphone addiction, mediating role emotional intelligence.A online questionnaire including Victimization Experience Scale, Smartphone Addiction Emotional Intelligence Scale among Chinese university students, were employed in this study. Finally, 1154 valid questionnaires collected. reliability confirmatory factor analysis results showed that all three scales had good validity.Structural Equation Model (SEM) demonstrated significantly predicted addiction intelligence partially mediated addiction. Bootstrap furthermore tested rigor effect.COVID-19 was important variables predicting students's martphone protective decreasing negative effect on addictive behaviors.
