Abstract Sub‐Saharan Africa is increasingly viewed as an important area for oil palm cultivation and expansion. Palm a commodity that can help developing countries like Cameroon attain their sustainable development goals (SDGs) targets through poverty alleviation (SDG 1) by providing revenue to smallholder farmers buy variety of food thereby reducing hunger. However, due the many negative environmental social consequences, sector needs be made more sustainable. In this study, we set out unpack complexities including costs benefits practice production. We use both gray peer‐reviewed literature, conversational interviews with managers certified mills, workshop smallholders in Cameroon. found face several challenges weak land tenure rights, poor‐quality seeds low‐yielding palms, lack skills, expertise, access financing. Certification could alleviate some financing, training improve yields, better seedlings, increased higher value markets. certification cost very high compared income from most farmers. Farmers will therefore need considerable assistance organizations brokers remain financially viable. Abstract Agrarian transition is often seen as a pathway towards sustainable development and increasing well‐being for rural households. However, empirical evidence on trade‐offs synergies between different dimensions of result agrarian transitions lacking. We conducted cross‐sectional survey 360 households across 12 villages in Savannakhet province, Lao PDR. find farmer types all included dimensions; economic, food security, health, gender equality. intensive paddy rice farmers, are predominantly positive, while non‐intensive cash crop farmers mostly negative. These findings indicate that one dimension may provide improvements other dimensions, but benefits can be difficult to achieve some farmers. Our results further suggest policies focussing single aspect, example supporting non‐farm incomes, have co‐benefits beyond the immediate targets.
