This review systematizes data on the coordination ability of mono- and disubstituted derivatives boron cluster anions carboranes in complexation with transition metals. Boron clusters [BnHn]2–, monocarborane [CBnHn–1]–, dicarboranes [C2BnHn–2] (with non-functionalized carbon atoms) (n = 10, 12) containing B–X exo-polyhedral bonds (X N, O, S, Hal) are discussed. Synthesis structural features complexes known to date described. The effect complexing metal substituent attached cage composition structures final is analyzed. It has been established that substituted can act as both ligands counterions. A agent coordinate due three-center two-electron 3c2e MHB bonds, by functional groups, or a mixed type be realized, through BH groups substituent. As for B-substituted carboranes, coordinated substituents salts non-coordinated carborane have isolated; compounds bonding not characteristic carboranes.

Mixed-ligand lead(II) complexes with 2,2′-bipyridyl and [B10H9OH]2− or monosubstituted hydroxy-substituted closo-decaborate anions a pendant hydroxy group, separated from the boron cage by an alkoxylic spacer of different lengths [B10H9O(CH2)xO(CH2)2OH]]2− (x = 2 5) have been synthesized. Compounds characterized IR multinuclear NMR spectroscopies. The structures binuclear complex [Pb(bipy)2[B10H9OH]]2·CH3CN (1·CH3CN), mononuclear [Pb(bipy)2[B10H9O(CH2)2O(CH2)2OH]]·0.5bipy·CH3CN (2·0.5bipy·CH3CN), polymeric [Pb(bipy)[B10H9O(CH2)5O(CH2)2OH]]n (3) determined single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In all three compounds, co-ordination polyhedra are formed N atoms two bipy molecules, O substituent attached to cage, BH groups cage.

Here, we present composites and materials that can be prepared starting with boron hydride cluster compounds (decaborane, decahydro-closo-decaborate dodecahydro-closo-dodecaborate anions carboranes). Recent examples of their utilization as protective coatings including using them to synthesize carbide, nitride, metal borides, metal-containing composites, neutron shielding are discussed. The data generalized demonstrate the versatile application based on carboranes in various fields.
