Au-based alloy nanoclusters (NCs) have attracted significant interest due to their unique properties, including chirality, magnetism, luminescence, and size-dependent characteristics. Despite promising potential, further efforts are required explore a broader range of ligands NCs fully unlock capabilities. Here, [Au13Cu4(MBA)12]3- (MBA = mercaptobenzoic acid) were synthesized from [Au25(MBA)18]- seed using MBA isomers as etching agents. The fragmented reassembled with Cu ions into NCs. This process, driven by ligands, was monitored time-dependent electrospray ionization mass spectrometry optical spectroscopies. Theoretical calculations suggested tetrahedral geometry for the stabilized interligand interactions. Notably, quantum yield [Au13Cu4(p-MBA)12]3- increased ∼14-fold compared that [Au25(p-MBA)18]- These results offer novel approach synthesizing water-soluble, size-focused NCs, opening up investigation new gold clusters enhanced properties applications.
