Abstract
Critical
systems
heuristics
(CSH)
has
been
influential
in
the
development
of
critical
thinking.
However,
it
is
a
relatively
underutilised
method
compared
with
soft
approaches
such
as
methodology
(SSM)
and
cognitive
mapping.
This
may
be
part
due
to
complexity
ideas
underpinning
CSH.
Core
which
users
must
feel
confident
include
boundary
critique,
coercion,
emancipation,
“is”
vs
“ought
be”
framings.
These
were
subject
early
discourse
surrounding
CSH,
considered
role
critique
research,
extent
CSH
could
meaningfully
address
claims
an
emancipatory
approach.
The
purpose
this
review
provide
clarity
on
these
key
concepts
by
reflecting
how
they
have
addressed
literature
date.
We
find
that
applied
range
problem
contexts
most
frequently
coercion
or
power
asymmetries.
