Frequent bacterial/fungal infections and occurrence of antibiotic resistance pose increasing threats to the public thus require development new antibacterial/antifungal agents strategies. Carbon dots (CDs) have been well demonstrated be promising potent antimicrobial nanomaterials serve as potential alternatives conventional antibiotics. In recent years, great efforts made by many researchers develop carbon dot-based combat microbial infections. Here, an update our previous relevant review (C 2019, 5, 33), we summarize achievements in utilization CDs for inactivation. We four kinds including nitrogen-doped CDs, metal-containing antibiotic-conjugated photoresponsive terms their starting materials, synthetic route, surface functionalization, ability, related mechanism if available. addition, emerging applications CD-related materials medical industry fields. Finally, discuss existing challenges future research directions that are worth exploring. believe this provides a comprehensive overview advances may inspire with desirable activities.
