This study investigates the sulfonation modification of cellulose for removal methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The prepared biosorbent was characterized, and its sorption capacity, kinetics, thermodynamics were systematically evaluated. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyzed structural modifications, while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examined surface properties. optimal sorbent dosage determined as 0.05 g. MB efficiency increased 11% at pH 1 to 70% 2, reaching 99% within range 3 7. Kinetic studies revealed rapid sorption, achieving min. Among various isotherm models, Langmuir model provided best fit (R 2 = 0.9989), indicating monolayer with a maximum capacity 37.65 mg/g. Thermodynamic analysis showed negative ΔG° values, confirming spontaneous process, an enthalpy change (ΔH°) -33.5 kJ/mol indicated exothermic behavior. entropy (ΔS°) -82.6 J mol-1·K-1 suggested decreased disorder during sorption. Regeneration demonstrated that 0.2 M HCl combined ethanol achieved highest desorption efficiency, after three cycles, remained above 99%. presence -SO3 - groups played crucial role in via ion exchange may also contribute through hydrogen bonding, thereby enhancing These findings highlight sulfonated efficient regenerable removal, offering valuable insights into mechanisms.
