Critical drivers and barriers of digital twin adoption in water infrastructure: An environmental, social, governance, and financial perspective

Abstract Digital twin (DT) is increasingly recognized as a valuable instrument for improving water infrastructure efficiency. However, current research has yet to identify drivers and barriers impacting the use of DT in practices. Preliminary work been undertaken regarding manufacturing, processing, construction industries, but not water. Therefore, this study engages two questions. First, what are adoption projects? Second, which these critical? A literature review targeting an Environmental, Social, Governance, Financial (ESG‐Financial) framework was candidate barriers. Text mining only supplements also validates refines list driving barrier factors obtained from reviews. Next, fuzzy decision‐making trial evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method utilized find those most critical. Subsequently, questionnaire survey provided cross‐validation DEMATEL results. Finally, 11 critical 8 were identified. Based on findings, some policy implications proposed, including developing potential environment monitoring, strengthening collaboration, model reuse, promoting value capture, enhancing publicity, increasing education investment.
