The development of country specific decarbonisation pathways is becoming increasingly common as more governments commit to achieving Net Zero. These are critical for setting the direction and pace decarbonisation. This article reviews characteristics fifteen different UK Zero (three government 12 additional pathways) shows how expectation technology innovation low-carbon energy abundance closes down space potential can occupy. In particular, we find that while conceptually different, three display a high degree similarity majority rely on significant amounts new clean retain large residual emissions in 2050 which requires deployment carbon dioxide removal technologies. dominance emission also observed international scenarios including IPCC's Shared Socioeconomic Baseline Pathways IEA's Energy Scenario. Purpose Researchers piloted a problem-based learning (PBL) activity in master’s degree-granting strategic studies program to explore how students apply knowledge and skills learned from the curriculum their formulation of strategy addressing real-world global security scenario. Design/methodology/approach This mixed-methods pilot study used ethnographic observation, participant feedback, document analysis surveys assess engagement multinational postgraduate context PBL environment. Findings revealed gaps students’ causal logic literacy, as well student discomfort with ambiguity reliance upon heuristic frameworks over willingness conduct substantive, current relevant research. Additionally, observed group dynamics represented lack inclusive collaboration mixed gender teams. These findings suggest foundational issues curriculum, teaching methodologies evaluation practices studied institution. Originality/value highlights need include explicit instruction problem-solving literacy (i.e. logical reasoning) programs for national professionals, authentic opportunities those practice interpersonal communication.
