Non-Indigenous Species (NIS) Know No Geopolitical Borders—An Update of NIS in the Aegean Sea DOI Creative Commons

In this work, combined efforts by Greek and Turkish scientists produced an updated validated NIS inventory of the Aegean ecoregion, covering 120 years records up to August 2024. Of 342 currently present in Sea, majority (281 species) have invaded South Aegean, followed North (128 species out 206 NIS). A total 73 were added list, while 56 removed. Overall, unaided spread Lessepsian immigrants from Levantine Sea shipping are equally responsible for reported at regional level. An increase publications addressing matches upward trend since mid-1990s, which continues day. While introductions and/or direct via Suez Canal peaked during 2000–2005, they 2012–2017 Aegean—a decade later. The opposite pattern was observed ship-transferred NIS. spatial distribution introduction hotspots largely reflects following phenomena/processes: is witnessed initially southeastern Sea; monitoring concentrated vulnerable at-risk areas; research relate allocation institutions marine experts working on along coasts.
