The role of new rural actors and entrepreneurial activities that utilize existing resources in ways is increasingly portrayed as crucial for revitalization. Local gastronomy food culture are often central to these processes, they tied the identity heritage a place. Global sustainability challenges, such as climate change, are creating more consensus around the necessity to transition sustainable farming methods and localized systems of production consumption. In European Union, conversion organic is now seen crucial achieve goals. Italy, in particular, one leading countries terms number farms farmland, has recently enacted legislation recognizing 'organic districts' forms territorial organization focused on production. This article provides an overview recent developments highlighting implications for Japan. Despite socio-cultural differences, Italy Japan both have a high percentage small-scale mountainous hilly areas. The two also face similar low profitability conventional farming, aging populations, farmland abandonment.
