ConspectusDwindling fossil resources and their associated environmental concerns have increased interest in biobased products. In particular, many approaches to convert lignocellulosic biomass into small-molecule building blocks are being explored via thermal, chemical, biological processes. Depending on structure, these molecules can be used as direct (i.e., drop-in) or indirect (different molecule from what is today) substitutes for petrochemicals. all such cases, must deconstructed, which involves the depolymerization of lignin polysaccharides well further transformation produce substitutes. Deconstruction often requires harsh conditions that cause degradation, upgrading implies multiple conversion steps, especially drop-in molecules, lead low atom economy. Our group has developed an aldehyde-stabilization strategy facilitates lignocellulose monomers high yields by stabilizing intermediates under deconstruction conditions. This now been adapted prepare petrochemicals with very economy including solvents, plastic precursors, adhesives, surfactants, widespread applications modern society. In this Account, we first introduce function aldehydes using formaldehyde (FA) example. Specifically, discuss role assisting isolation ability stabilize looking at monomer obtained after hydrogenolysis aldehyde-functionalized lignin. Highly selective production was achieved acetaldehyde (AA) propionaldehyde (PPA) a stabilization reagent either reductive oxidative depolymerization. typical FA-assisted fractionation, hemicellulose directly converted diformylxylose (DFX), while cellulose properties similar those organosolv isolated but could diformyl-glucose isomers (DFGs) hydrolysis. These stable provide us new method preserve sugar degrade during acidic will discussed Section 3. Besides, DFX also green solvent (Section 4), FA-lignin exhibits excellent adhesion plywood preparation 5). Biobased glyoxylic acid (GA) yield dimethylglyoxylic-acid-xylose (DMGX), terephthalic (TA) substitute bioplastics 6), GA-lignin demonstrates great amphiphilic finds surfactants cosmetic products 7). When fatty were reagents, both downstream defunctionalization We current limitations utilization potential solutions improvements said limitations. With hope spur aldehyde tool deconstruct build consumer around functionalized thus largely preserved natural structures.
