Socio-Economically Disadvantaged Male Students’ Hesitancy to Study Biology in Ireland: Factors Effecting Intent in the Transition to Upper Secondary School

While
it
is
evident
that
Ireland
has
the
ambition
to
widen
access
higher
education,
there
are
challenges;
especially
regarding
decision-making
process
of
socio-economically
disadvantaged
youth
when
selecting
subjects
for
transition
into
education.
This
particular
concern
abundant
science-related
courses
in
as
well
careers,
which
fundamental
global
economy,
and
a
cohort
Ireland’s
choosing
this
pathway.
National
statistics
highlight
disproportionate
participation
rate
across
genders
upper
secondary
school
science
Extensive
research
been
invested
exploring
supporting
female
male-dominated
fields
(e.g.,

ameliorate

amongst

males.
