The denitrification process plays an important role in improving water quality and is a source/sink of nitrous oxide to the atmosphere. second rate-limiting step catalyzed by two enzymes with different structures unrelated evolutionary relationships, namely, Cu-type nitrite reductase encoded nirK gene cytochrome cd1-type nirS gene. Soil moisture is the major factor influencing microbial properties and nitrous oxide (N2O) production. Agricultural soils can be probed under wetting, wet/dry alternating, constant conditions to evaluate combined effects of early (previous) immediate (current) on N2O emission nitrification/denitrification.
