Abstract The contribution of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Annular Mode (SAM) to variations leading modes atmospheric circulation in Africa south equator, during austral summer (i.e., from December March), is examined this study. rotated principal component analysis applied classify study region. result showed that relatively, through control sea level pressure mid-latitudes, SAM more related variability Overall, period, explained about 20% 46% variance modes. ENSO rather explains up 10% variance. Due continuous nature circulation, incorporating co-variability classified patterns adds skill predictability joint SAM, ENSO, other less frequent regional are modes, 80% modes—which indeed an added value further considering natural gradient patterns.

Climate variability poses a significant threat to smallholder farmers in the Gwayi catchment, Zimbabwe. This study investigated spatiotemporal dynamics of agrometeorological droughts from 1990 2020 using Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI), Evapotranspiration (SPEI), Vegetation Condition (VCI), and Health (VHI). The triangulation these indices provided comprehensive understanding drought dynamics. Severe extreme events were identified 1995, 1998, 2005, 2016, 2018, 2020, while moderate consistently detected across all indices. Favourable conditions observed 2000 2006. A strong positive correlation (r = 0.88) between VHI VCI suggests their similar effectiveness reflecting vegetation health. In contrast, correlations SPI 0.30), SPEI 0.39), 0.28), 0.40) indicate that capture complementary information, not only precipitation deficits but also impacts temperature, soil moisture, land cover changes. displayed 0.78), aligning sensitivity evapotranspiration. Spatial analysis revealed pronounced north-south gradient, with southwestern region being particularly vulnerable, underscoring need for targeted interventions.
