Abstract The study of shortwave (SW) radiation and its interactions with our planet has proven critical for advancing the understanding Earth–atmosphere system. Here, author shares an accessible high-level perspective on recent progress, surprises encountered, promising future research directions a . A brief context SW is provided, after which three specific aspects are focused upon that considers particularly important. First, significance three-dimensional (3D) radiative effects highlighted via impacts surface downward in complex cloud fields. Crucially, it shown probability distributions can only be reliably simulated when accounting 3D effects, implications various applications next-generation atmospheric modeling. Second, often overlooked diurnal cycle global top-of-atmosphere upward underscored by quantifying controlling properties processes. Opportunities improved satellite observations noted. Third, wealth information provided spectral dimension demonstrated through extraction attribution signatures. It argued further exploration dimension, aided recently launched upcoming suite spectrally resolved observations, promises new era research.
