Abstract This study presents a novel framework within unified monsoon coordinate system for quantifying variability of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) through integrating two new concepts: vector projection (MVP), intensity and directed angle (DA), capturing directional variability. The newly introduced MVP DA indices based on show very significant correlations with summer precipitation in middle-lower Yangtze River, much more surpassing previous EASM can also capture Meiyu-Changma-Baiu belt's spatial pattern clearly comprehensively. Strong years are characterized by convergence, indicated along Meiyu front, coupled anomalous cyclonic shear, reflected deflection, being associated wetter conditions belt westward extension southward shift Western Pacific Subtropical High (WPSH), alongside drier northern China, which together manifest north-south dipole pattern. In contrast, weak exhibit opposite characteristics strong years. Moreover, this paper proposes creative conception—the Rossby wave ray flux (WRF), reflect pathway activity Indo-Asian-Pacific (IAP) teleconnection well. be extended to other domains could provide valuable insights better variabilities monsoons understanding their relationships climate factors future. Meanwhile, WRF may tool diagnosing local propagation direction waves.
