Biomarkers of food intake (BFIs) are a promising tool for limiting misclassification in nutrition research where more subjective dietary assessment instruments used. They may also be used to assess compliance guidelines or intervention. therefore hold promise direct and objective measurement intake. However, the number comprehensively validated biomarkers is limited just few. Many new candidate emerge from metabolic profiling studies advances chemistry. Furthermore, identified based on extensive literature reviews such as described Biomarker Food Intake Reviews (BFIRev). To systematically critically validity intake, it necessary outline streamline an optimal reproducible validation process. A consensus-based procedure was provide evaluate set most important criteria systematic BFIs. As result, developed including eight criteria, plausibility, dose-response, time-response, robustness, reliability, stability, analytical performance, inter-laboratory reproducibility. The has dual purpose: (1) estimate current level approach (2) pinpoint which additional needed full each biomarker This position paper outlines second step BFIRev but identified, e.g., metabolomic studies.

Although some polyphenol biomarkers in serum or urine have been identified by untargeted metabolomics and proved to reflect dietary intake, only a few of them validated different studies populations with simple reliable targeted methods. In the present study, method LC/MS/MS for measurement twenty-two samples was established effectively assess habitual intake free-living healthy Chinese subjects. Multivariate logistic regression models were used relationships overweight obesity after adjusting potential confounders. The levels urinary biomarkers, especially gut microbial metabolites polyphenols, inversely associated obesity, this association more pronounced inflammatory groups, suggesting that it is great importance maintain at high intake-sufficient polyphenols chronic inflammation than others. these may offer valid alternative complementary addition self-reported survey evaluation investigation into their disease-related endpoints large-scale clinical epidemiologic studies.

Abstract Objective To investigate the association of plasma vitamin C and carotenoids, as indicators fruit vegetable intake, with risk type 2 diabetes. Design Prospective case-cohort study. Setting Populations from eight European countries. Participants 9754 participants incident diabetes, a subcohort 13 662 individuals Investigation into Cancer Nutrition (EPIC) cohort 340 234 participants: EPIC-InterAct Main outcome measure Incident Results In multivariable adjusted model, higher was associated lower developing diabetes (hazard ratio per standard deviation 0.82, 95% confidence interval 0.76 to 0.89). A similar inverse shown for total carotenoids 0.75, 0.68 0.82). composite biomarker score (split five equal groups), comprising individual inversely hazard ratios 0.77, 0.66, 0.59, 0.50 groups 2-5 compared group 1 (the lowest group). Self-reported median intake 274 g/day, 396 508 g/day in categories defined by 1, 3, 5 score, respectively. One difference equivalent 66 (95% 61 71) 0.75 (0.67 0.83). This would be an absolute reduction 0.95 1000 person years follow up if achieved across entire population characteristics countries included this analysis. Conclusions These findings indicate between C, their different biomarkers are objective consumption, suggest that diets rich even modestly consumption could help prevent development

Abstract Taste perception plays a key role in determining individual food preferences and dietary habits. Individual differences bitter, sweet, umami, sour, or salty taste may influence habits, affecting nutritional status nutrition-related chronic disease risk. In addition to these traditional modalities there is growing evidence that "fat taste" represent sixth modality. Several receptors have been identified within cell membranes on the surface of tongue, they include T2R family bitter receptors, T1R associated with sweet umami perception, ion channels PKD1L3 PKD2L1 linked sour taste, integral membrane protein CD36, which putative receptor. Additionally, epithelial sodium vanilloid receptor, TRPV1, account for perception. Common polymorphisms genes involved some interindividual habits between populations. This variability could affect choices health risk disease. review will summarize present state knowledge genetic variation how such might intake behaviors.

Elucidation of the relationships between genotype, diet, and health requires accurate dietary assessment. In intervention epidemiological studies, assessment usually relies on questionnaires, which are susceptible to recall bias. An alternative approach is quantify biomarkers intake in biofluids, but few such markers have been validated so far. Here we describe use metabolomics for discovery nutritional biomarkers, using citrus fruits as a case study. Three study designs were compared. Urinary metabolomes profiled volunteers that had (a) consumed an acute dose orange or grapefruit juice, (b) juice regularly one month, (c) reported high low consumption products large cohort Some signals found reflect all three studies. Proline betaine flavanone glucuronides identified known various other revealed. Further, many increased after not sensitive enough discriminate consumers We propose urine profiling subjects stratified by effective strategy wide range foods.

Diet is a leading modifiable risk factor for chronic disease, but it remains difficult to measure accurately due the error and bias inherent in self-reported methods of diet assessment. Consequently, there pressing need more objective biomarkers use health research. The stable isotope ratios light elements are promising set candidate because they vary naturally reproducibly among foods, those variations captured molecules tissues with high fidelity. Recent studies have identified valid isotopic measures short- long-term sugar intake, meat fish intake specific populations. These provide strong foundation validating general US population. Approaches improve specificity foods needed; example, by modeling using multiple or isolating measuring linked interest.
