Assessing stress in wild populations is important many ecological and conservation contexts because the physiological responses of individuals to stressors can be used identify at-risk ability respond appropriately related individual quality fitness. Yet, one great challenges ecophysiology linking measures animal with changes Here, we examined two indices stress, namely, circulating baseline corticosterone concentration ([Cort]) heterophil:lymphocyte (H/L) ratio, a long-lived seabird, Nazca booby ( Sula granti ) their relationship current state subsequent survival residual lifetime reproductive success. [Cort] was sex, age, effort that males, older birds, birds currently engaged breeding attempt had higher [Cort]. negatively associated next season. The H/L ratio not but predicted cohort-specific long-term survival. Lifespan performance are correlated boobies; therefore, our results suggest may useful as an indicator overall fitness, while predict or near-term fitness this species. We further propose [or neutrophil/lymphocyte (N/L)] Ratio-Fitness Hypothesis, which posits repeatable within This hypothesis needs tested boobies other species, when supported by empirical evidence, then these ratios could powerful monitoring tool for assessing population health identifying populations.

As humans alter landscapes worldwide, land and wildlife managers need reliable tools to assess monitor responses of populations. Glucocorticoid (GC) hormone levels are one common physiological metric used quantify how populations coping in the context their environments. Understanding whether GC can reflect broad landscape characteristics, using data that free commonplace diverse stakeholders, is an important step towards biomarkers having practical application management conservation. We conducted a phylogenetic comparative analysis publicly available datasets test efficacy GCs as biomarker for large spatial-scale avian population monitoring. from HormoneBase (51 species), natural history information US national cover determine if baseline or stress-induced corticosterone varies with amount usable types within each species' home range. found levels, but not baseline, positively correlated per cent both across species. Our results indicate concentrations may be useful characterizing range habitat availability, we advocate more studies on non-traditional species less studied build this framework. Biologging devices are providing detailed insights into the behaviour and movement of animals in their natural environments. It is usually assumed that this method gathering data does not impact on observed. However, potential negative effects birds have rarely been investigated before field‐based studies initiated. Seabirds which both fly use pursuit diving may be particularly sensitive to increases drag load resulting from carrying biologging devices. We studied chick‐rearing adult common guillemots Uria aalge equipped with without back‐mounted GPS tags over short deployments a few days. Concurrently carried small leg‐mounted TDR (time‐depth recorders) activity throughout. Changes body mass breeding success were followed for device control guillemots. At colony level lost throughout period. When‐equipped additional tag, at close twice rate they did when only smaller device. The elevated loss suggests an energy expenditure or foraging performance. When performance, time‐activity budgets daily patterns unchanged, yet dive depth distributions differed. review tag‐effects sp. finding reduced chick‐provisioning most commonly observed effects. Less information available behavioural measures, results vary between studies. In general, deployed several days appear no measurable effect variables guillemot tagging there still impacts fitness via physiological and/or chick‐provisioning, while more measures (e.g. using accelerometery) reveal flight
