ABSTRACT The northeast margin of Ordos Basin, China has a large area with ‘bleached sandstone’, unique rock characterised by low diagenetic degree and poor cementation degree. Long‐term wind hydraulic erosion have led to significant soil erosion, vegetation degradation ecological carrying capacity in this region, huge amounts sediments being transported the Yellow River. Therefore, it is critical investigate weathering mechanism physicochemical characteristics bleached sandstone. In study, pore structure, elemental composition, mineral composition radon exhalation sandstone were analysed using low‐temperature nitrogen adsorption instrument, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, polarising microscope environmental detector, respectively. Moreover, determine correlation among them. results demonstrated that development significantly higher than original rock, content mesopores size from 2 50 nm highest. These pores found be predominantly slit parallel plate structure. primarily quartz, feldspar, clay minerals muscovite, quartz Quartz feldspar exhibited weathering, broken crystals more impurities. A amount biotite was altered form muscovite. intergranular spaces are filled heterobase, composed minerals. Additionally, formed ring band structure around particle skeleton. Bleached rich P, Ba, Mn, Sr, Zr other elements, Ba showing highest proportion. enriched toxic elements Be, As, Cd, Sb, Hg, Tl 238 U compared indicating latter certain adsorption. Among them, Be enrichment light rare earth deficient heavy earth. δEu δCe exhibit slight deficiency. Although rate low, rock. high porosity micropore can promote exhalation. High enhance generation, which positive rate. research provide reference for management, utilisation region.
