Animal vocalizations contain a varying degree of nonlinear phenomena (NLP) caused by irregular or chaotic vocal organ dynamics. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain NLP presence, from unintentional by-products poor technique having functional communicative role. We aimed disentangle the role sex, age and physiological constraints in occurrence songs lemur Indri indri , which are complex harmonic displays organized phrases. Age sex affected presence type songs. In particular, proportion considered decreased with age, except for subharmonics. Subharmonics potentially mediate perception lower pitch, making signallers appear larger. frequency jumps occurred lower-pitched notes than regular units, while chaos sidebands higher-pitched units. This suggests that different types can be associated constraints. Finally, indris might present short-term fatigue, units occurring last position phrase highest probability containing NLP. The result proximate causes, such as constraints, ultimate evolutionary pressures, shaped article is part theme issue ‘Nonlinear vertebrate vocalizations: mechanisms functions’.

Abstract Animal songs differ from calls in function and structure, have comparative translational value, showing similarities to human music. Rhythm music is often distributed quantized classes of intervals known as rhythmic categories. These been found the a few nonhuman species but never their calls. Are categories song‐specific, music, or can they transcend song–call boundary? We analyze vocal displays one mammals producing both call sequences: Indri indri . test whether (a) are conserved across produced different contexts, (b) exist sequences, (c) between sequences. show that occur displays. Vocalization type modulate deployment find isochrony (1:1 ratio, like rhythm ticking clock) all song types, only advertisement three (1:1, 1:2, 2:1 ratios). Like songs, some types also isochronous. Isochrony backbone most vocalizations, unlike speech, where it rare. In indri, underlies hierarchy‐less sequences might be ancestral both.
