The
new
field
of
primate
archaeology
investigates
the
technological
behavior
and
material
record
nonhuman
primates,
providing
valuable
comparative
data
on
our
understanding
human
evolution.
Yet,
paralleling
hominin
archaeology,
is
largely
biased
toward
analysis
lithic
artifacts.
While
have
been
gained
through
an
examination
extant
tool
use
its
archaeological
record,
focusing
this
one
single
aspect
provides
limited
insights.
It
therefore
necessary
to
explore
what
extent
other
non-technological
activities,
such
as
non-tool
aided
feeding,
traveling,
social
behaviors
or
ritual
displays,
leave
traces
that
could
be
detected
in
record.
Here
we
propose
four
areas
investigation
which
believe
overlooked
by
are
crucial
uncovering
full
potential
behavioral
repertoire,
including
own:
(1)
Plant
technology;
(2)
Archaeology
beyond
(3)
Landscape
archaeology;
(4)
Primate
cultural
heritage.
We
discuss
each
theme
context
latest
developments
challenges,
well
future
directions.
Developing
a
more
"inclusive"
will
not
only
benefit
study
evolution
own
right
but
aid
conservation
efforts
increasing
changes
primate-environment
interactions
over
time.

Abstract
Ecology
is
fundamental
in
the
development,
transmission,
and
perpetuity
of
primate
technology.
Previous
studies
on
tool
site
selection
have
addressed
relevance
targeted
resources
raw
materials
for
tools,
but
few
considered
broader
foraging
landscape.
In
this
landscape-scale
study
ecological
contexts
wild
chimpanzee
(
Pan
troglodytes
verus
)
use,
we
investigated
conditions
required
nut-cracking
to

long-term

Guinea.
We
examined
three
levels:
selection,
frequency
inactivity.

data

foods,
nut
trees,
using
transect
quadrat
methods,
conducted
forest-wide
surveys

nests
watercourses.

linear
models
descriptive
statistics.
found
that,
further
presence

tree
availability

abundance
food-providing
trees
as
well
proximity
nest
sites
were
significant
predictors
occurrence.

suggests
that
spatial
distribution
mediated
by
behavioural
landscape
influenced
non-extractive
perennial
non-foraging
activities.

The
western
chimpanzee
(Pan
troglodytes
verus)
is
"Critically
Endangered"
due
to
a
gradual
decrease
of
its
population
and
continuous
degradation
their
habitats.Niokolo
Koba
National
Park
considered
an
important
biodiversity
area
in
West
Africa
has
high
conservation
value
for
chimpanzees.However,
Niokolo
been
inscribed
on
the
World
Heritage
list
as
being
Danger
since
2007
anthropogenic
factors.Over
last
40
years,
only
sporadic
shortterm
studies
ecology
behavior
chimpanzees
park
have
occurred.For
this
reason,
we
studied
nesting
putative
community
Antenna
zone.We
also
identified
sympatric
medium
large
mammals
using
camera
trap.Chimpanzees
mostly
used
Hexalobus
monopetalus
nesting,
followed
by
Pterocarpus
erinaceus.Nest
heights
zone
were
lower
than
they
are
Assirik,
outside
at
Fongoli
Diaguiri
sites
despite
presence
potential
predators
park.Predator
influences
height
behavior.These
data
deepen
our
knowledge
about
Senegal,

management
