Abstract Background Identifying alternative sustainable feed sources with high nutritional values is crucial for the future of environmentally and socially responsible aquaculture. In this regard, microalgae have been proven to positive effects on fish health, which overwhelmed our interest in study. Methods Pediastrum boryanum ( P. ) was incorporated into Nile tilapia at concentrations 0, 0.75, 1.5 mg/kg, as control, PbExt 0.75 , groups assess its growth biochemical indices, oxidant/antioxidant activities, immune stress-related gene expression, intestinal morphology. Results After 8 weeks, fed supplemented exhibited significant increases final weight, length, condition factor, body weight gain, specific rate, while spleen-somatic index (SSI) hepatosomatic (HSI) showed no differences compared control group. Dietary supplementation also enhanced IgM levels lysozyme activity, along marked effect markers liver function enzymes (alanine aminotransferase/ALT aspartate aminotransferase/AST) or protein status (total albumin). Furthermore, addition increased activity superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GSH) enzymes, highlighting antioxidant potential, whereas malondialdehyde (MDA) among groups. Gene expression analysis revealed that tumor necrosis factor-α TNF-α) interleukin-10 IL-10) transforming factor-β1 TGF-β1) notably containing feed, difference observed hepatic Heat Shock Protein 70 HSP70) mRNA expression. Histopathological examination adverse liver, spleen, tissues. Villous height villous surface area were group, suggesting improved integrity nutrient absorption. Conclusion can potentially improve performance, response, status, health tilapia, making it a promising candidate

Astaxanthin, a xanthophyll carotenoid, exhibits potent biological functions, including antioxidant, immune regulation, growth promotion, improved reproductive capacity, and enhancement of the body color aquatic animals. In recent years, with rapid development aquaculture industry, application astaxanthin in has garnered increasing attention. Studies have demonstrated that significantly enhances antioxidant capacity animals, reduces oxidative damage, regulates expression immune-related genes, thereby improving immunity disease resistance. Moreover, promotes performance, particularly high-value species, where it also serves as natural pigment to increase market competitiveness. However, low bioavailability high production costs remain major constraints its widespread use aquaculture. To address these limitations, various strategies—such microencapsulation, liposomal delivery, nanotechnology—have been explored improve stability water solubility. Additionally, expanding sources optimizing processes are effective approaches reducing costs. This review summarizes advances research within aquaculture, highlights multifunctional roles promoting health efficiency discusses current challenges future directions.
