Abstract Grasslands are one of the most common land‐cover types, providing important ecosystem services globally, yet few studies have examined grassland critical‐zone functioning throughout hillslopes. This study characterised a coastal over small hillslope at Point Reyes National Seashore, California, using multidisciplinary techniques, combining remotely‐sensed, geophysical, plant, and soil measurements. Clustering techniques delineated area into four landscape zones, up‐, mid‐, down‐slope, bordering riparian ecotone, which had distinct environmental properties that varied spatially across site, with depth, time. Soil moisture increased depth down slope towards zone, co‐varied CO 2 flux rates both temporally. highlighted three controls on respiration: fluxes were inhibited by high content in down‐slope during wet winter months, converged positions dry summer while also displaying post‐rain pulses. The normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) ranged from 0.32 (September)–0.80 (April) correlated positively aboveground biomass, moving slope. Yet, NDVI, not to organic carbon (SOC) (0.4%–4.5%), was highest mid‐slope. SOC may instead be linked shifts dominant species their rhizosphere position. characterisation significant heterogeneity position, demonstrated an approach could used characterise other environments

Calcium (Ca)-enhanced organic matter (OM) fouling of nanofiltration (NF) membranes leads to reduced flux during desalination and requires frequent cleaning. Fouling mechanisms are not fully understood, which limits the development targeted control methods. This study employed synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence (XRF) absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy quantify spatial distribution mass Ca deposition as well changes in coordination environment characteristic specific mechanisms, respectively. Bench-scale filtration experiments were performed using feed solutions containing ten different types (OM), common scalants, calcium carbonate (CaCO
