Summary Many conservation problems remain intractable because of conflicting views between policymakers, managers, researchers, conservationists and community stakeholders. Novel approaches to resolving these conflicts are required achieve outcomes that more broadly acceptable. The management K'gari wongari (Fraser Island's Dingoes) is emblematic such a situation. Here we describe the successful implementation novel approach advancing one formerly issue – assessing genetic health status island's Dingoes resolve latent assist protected area managers with their activities. We developed participatory, independent centred on workshops identify research priorities, expert appropriate methods, then commissioning scientific address priorities in accordance experts' suggested methods. overall aim project was provide robust policy‐ready information also met expectations widely supported by subject matter experts. participatory achieved this completed successfully satisfactorily for all involved despite occurrence some expected challenges necessary compromises. background problem, how designed, key faced during implementation, learnings from exercise, thereby highlighting its innovative features as conflict resolution process. This process could be applied advance other hampered stakeholder views.
