Although a sense of belonging can be critical lever for promoting college persistence, students, particularly those from historically marginalized backgrounds, may experience threats to their on campus. Research has documented that might experienced differently depending students' racial/ethnic and gender identities. We used the 2018 Community College Survey Student Engagement (CCSSE) explore how much community students feel like they belong it vary by race/ethnicity, intersections. Based an intercategorical approach examine intersections we also test what extent sociodemographic characteristics, institutional racial make-up, campus experiences, perceived support, support external agents predict belonging. Our findings suggest there are small moderate disparities in demographic variables differentially when disaggregating gender-racial/ethnic groups.

ABSTRACT College athletes at the community college level, specifically of color, may experience unique threats to their belonging along multiple dimensions, including but not limited academic spaces learning, assessing athletic merit by comparing themselves Division I athletes, and racialized tensions within white‐centric campuses. At intersection these experiences, we examine how advising be a significant functional area for supporting sense color. Our sequential explanatory mixed method design study combined quantitative approach using secondary data from Community Survey on Student Engagement (CCSSE) with qualitative collaborative (trio)ethnography share stories authors experiences as advisors. Quantitative findings suggested that who developed an plan advisor experienced higher belonging; furthermore, working had cascading influences self‐efficacy, motivation, perceptions campus support, which in turn, were positively linked belonging. Qualitative reinforced critical roles can play foster belonging, especially when adopting holistic activistic Implications practice are included.
