This research explored the identities and agency of Asian international TESOL doctoral students at a large Australian university, employing sociocultural perspective collaborative autoethnography with qualitative content analysis. The study revealed that these navigated complex, co-evolving – including learner, early-career researcher, academic shaped by their prior professional experiences. It highlighted significant identity tensions influenced temporal dimensions experiences, where past current identities, as well imagined future selves, informed decisions coping strategies. interplay was conceptualised through Vygotsky's concept perezhivanie, reflecting how personal situational factors coalesced to impact trajectories. A conceptual model, findings, illustrated were mediated experiences situationally catalysed tensions. formative episodes in learning experience, offering insights into challenges developmental trajectories students. further substantiates value for understanding supporting growth this cohort.

Institutional habitus and individual postgraduation plans: an analysis of Chinese students in transnational higher education DOI

This paper focuses on an emerging group in Chinese higher education – students transnational (TNHE). Recent research has documented much about students' motivations for attending TNHE institutions. However, the impact of such institutions student outputs remains under-researched. study conducted interviews with 78 final-year undergraduates and 10 staff from two Sino-foreign cooperative universities (SFCUs) to understand how their plans postgraduate career, as well relevant preparedness, were affected by in-situ experiences. Using institutional habitus conjunction concepts capital field a conceptual framework, showed that negotiated complex mix sociocultural status, Westernised organisational practices neoliberal climate they projected prepared postgraduation plans. The transformative outcomes experiences are intertwined SFCUs. findings indicated forces strengthened educational disposition pursue studies Western countries. new culture norms experienced at these modified sense constraint, enhanced cosmopolitan orientation towards workplace manifested more flexible career attitudes. also revealed penetrated environment, influencing extent which enacted agency preparation future, some developing enterprising selves while others felt marginalised disempowered competition. implications practitioners support transition next stage.
