Abstract The complexity of mathematics teaching is especially evident in lessons where teachers build on students’ genuine ideas, such as problem-based lessons. To enhance teachers’ capacity for rich discussions instruction, we have developed a unique approximation practice: digital asynchronous simulations make subject-specific decisions virtual teacher avatar. are based materials and principles from practice-based professional development (PD) program, implemented with small groups teachers. self-paced simulation model offers flexibility scalability, allowing more to participate their own schedules, but it lacks key affordances collaborative PD. examine how leverage the collaborative, PD, this paper uses design-based research approach explicate mechanisms which can support learning about We focus two cycles design, implementation, analysis, revisions model, drawing data educators, prospective performance, reflective assignments. analysis illustrates design – Authenticity teacher’s work , Nuanced feedback were transformed better reflect aspects learning. argue that self-paced, indirect effectively emulate PD supporting growth. also contributes literature noticing decision-making, examining interact simulated environments. suggest implications designing simulations, emerging technologies.
