Saccharina latissima is a brown algal kelp species of ecological and economic importance. As the rise in sea surface temperature will threaten not only wild populations S. but also productivity farms, crop enhancement techniques become crucial to mitigate this threat. Priming common strategy plants, which seeds are pre-exposed moderate stress improve performance tolerance plants when exposed harsher conditions. We investigated potential thermal priming growth . Kelp gametophytes primed at 20°C for 2, 4 6 wk then re-transferred 5°C were compared naïve treatment maintained 5°C. Gametophyte increased subsequently formed sporophytes by up 30% (for priming) treatment. Female gametophyte environment was positively correlated offspring sporophyte growth, indicating maternal effect. Sporophytes heat 20°, 22°, 23° 24°C 2 wk. from exhibited 11 d longer 22°C, 7 23°C 1°C higher over priming. A time optimal both tolerance. Our results suggest that promising technique could yield seaweed farmers restoration forests threatened warming climates.
