Understanding the processes and potential mechanisms of species coexistence within biological communities is a key issue in biodiversity conservation. The Huaihe River Basin, situated transitional zone between northern southern China, encompasses diverse wetland types its middle reaches, including lakes, ponds, rivers, subsidence areas. This unique combination habitats provides an ideal natural laboratory for investigating governing bird community dynamics. Here, we quantified species, taxonomic, functional, phylogenetic diversity waterbird across different types. To assess patterns clustering or overdispersion, compared mean pairwise distance (MPD) nearest taxon (MNTD) to null models, employing functional dendrograms trees as analytical frameworks. Additionally, hierarchical partitioning approach was employed evaluate independent contributions multi-scale environmental variables assembly processes. indicators among display asynchronous patterns, reflecting variations ecological dynamics these habitats, with highest river wetlands. Our findings reveal that filtering predominantly governs monotonous open water bodies. In contrast, wetlands characterized by high heterogeneity are primarily shaped competitive exclusion, which emerges mechanism influencing structure. Moreover, our research demonstrates increasing habitat drives shift from greater dispersion. study highlights importance structuring assemblages suggests will contribute

Urbanization and habitat fragmentation increasingly threaten global avian biodiversity, leading to biotic homogenization declining community heterogeneity. University campuses, particularly those with wetland ecosystems, are emerging as important refugia for bird species. This study examines diversity, dominance patterns, structure across the Gölköy-Yumrukaya (GY) surrounding campus habitats of Bolu Abant İzzet Baysal University, Türkiye. Between 2017 2023, systematic field surveys recorded 173 species from 45 families. The results underscore ecological significance GY a complementary habitat, summer visitor passage migrant Seasonal analyses reveal peak richness diversity during breeding migration periods, while winter exhibits lower increased concentration, especially among urban-adaptive highlights importance artificial wetlands in fragmented landscapes, provided they maintain connectivity natural systems. Additionally, newly proposed metric, Heterogeneity Ratio (Hr), is introduced, offering higher-resolution assessment dynamics compared traditional indices. Due its sensitivity temporal fluctuations abundance evenness, Hr recommended valuable tool future biodiversity assessments.
