Lowland rice is often cultivated in catchments dominated by wetlands. However, no study the public domain has assessed impacts of lowland irrigation on most dominant wetland plant species Africa (papyrus) under a future climate. Hydrological modelling results, complemented with ecologically relevant statistical analyses, indicate that climate change, due to projected increase precipitation over East African region, will significantly influence inflow more than for command area 2300 ha, equivalent irrigated catchment ratio order 1:70. Like studies other parts world, extreme flows are affected, which could affect papyri reproduction. The extremes particularly affected frequency and duration. 30-year median annual high low pulse drop from 15 18 17–22 1–3. yearly duration 2 2–3 days 35–45 12–24 days. Overall, findings this can help managers similar ecosystems plan conservation programmes enhance productivity papyri, given it keystone species.
